Keep number of total employees lower to reduce absenteeism

Various factors show the relatshioship between a lower total number of workers and less absent days. Two main factors are -

Fear of job loss - if the company is growing there is no fear of job loss so workers take more days off or sick days
Healthy worker effect - during downsizing, workers with highest number of absent days are dismissed more rapidly, so others are reluctant to take time off unless absolutely needed
