Journalistic irresponsibility

Fine and misdemeanor charge for check book journalism in California

A law making it illegal for media and law enforcement to exchange money or other compensation for information on criminal investigations. The law was prompted by the arrest of movie star Mel Gibson for drunk driving. If media personnel violate the law they can be fined up to 1,000 and charged with a misdemeanor. Doesn't seem real stiff, considering all the fame and benefits they could receive for one hot breaking news story. But it's a start.
