To preserve stonework, understand how it was created

Coating ancient objects with materials you think will preserve them may actually bring more deterioration. It is helpful to have a layer of sealing material on carved statues. But if they were cast using a natron/stone mixture it’s possible the curing process may be reversed when the cast object is exposed to today's environmental factors, so sealing would harm more than protect them.
