Recycling old technology - redeploy instead.
I have researched and found local recycling companies that as a non-profit organisation buy old technology for a percentage of its 'actual' worth. The technology is then re-built in local workshops and sent to countries with emerging economies to be deployed by civil servants and teachers.
There are a number of companies that offer these services, a sensible Google search will find them. NOTE: with the latest launch of sub £300 laptops (>$400) the value of obsolete technology has fallen to little more than the costs to ship and revamp. So it makes sense to re-deploy the technology in another country than simple throw them away.
You do need to careful check the Companies you end up dealing with, there are companies that will simply ship old technology to third World recyclers where the remove the valuable elements (usually copper) by burning, of course this work is done by those in their society who cannot make a living any other way....with terrible consequences to their health and future.
We can all help with this by making sure that the technology we recycle is working and in good condition, each machine that it faulty should be labelled with any faults and reason for decommission. this way parts can be cannibalised from other machines and a maximum amount of re-deployed.
