Reduce the amount of personal information you give away for free.

Do not call databases help reduce telemarketing irritation once your phone number is on a list, but it is only part of the solution.

Consumers also need to be conscious of the personal information that they give away for free.

Whenever someone registers to vote, gets a credit check, accepts supposedly "free" additional features on a credit card, gives phone number during a checkout at a retail store, or fails to check/uncheck the permission to share information boxes on website you are risking having your personal information leaking to do not call lists. Some of this is unavoidable because information is available in public databases and non-profits are often exempt from the do not call rules, but consumers should ask themselves is trading their contact information for a coupon, a chance to win some sweepstakes, or for free (because someone asks for it) a fair deal. Restricting information you give away will also help protect against identity theft.

This is a part of the solution. It also begs the question how do we affordably educate consumers about this solution.
