All natural by product deodorizer

I had a serious problem with offensive odors from bags of pipe tobacco ashes – until I noticed that when I placed peanut shells in the bag, I could place my nose inside and there were no odors. I then tried it in a cat liter box; same result. No idea why but peanut shells are a very effective deodorizer.
