Novel Antenna Angiography Catheter

Background: Cardiac catheterization is typically performed with stiff-tipped catheters. In order to engage a blood vessel orifice, the stiff tip must be positioned at a precise location, and in the correct orientation. During the relatively extensive manipulation sometimes required for target vessel cannulation, the stiff catheter may cause vessel trauma to the wall of the blood vessel or the cardiac chamber. In addition, the opening of a target blood vessel may be difficult to locate with the catheter. An improved catheter design would allow for improved ability to rapidly locate the origin of target blood vessels, along with a reduced risk of vessel trauma. Technology: To this end, a novel catheter with elastic properties has been developed. This catheter has a tip that is designed to assume an orientation that promotes atraumatic entry of the catheter into the opening of a target vessel. The catheter can also be designed to measure changes in blood pool impedance. An abrupt increase in impedance indicates movement from large blood pool (e.g. aorta) into smaller blood pool (e.g. coronary artery), allowing for non-fluoroscopic confirmation of target vessel cannulation. Application: This improved catheter design would be efficacious in the cannulation of arterial vessels, and veins, and for tubular structure (e.g., ureter, bile duct, bladder) cannulation.
