MousePuter

Imagine setting down your Smart Phone and PDA on the desk of a conference room, and connecting wireless to a flat panel TV on the wall. You connect a wireless keyboard to your PDA and begin to run a spreadsheet that is displayed on the 60” flat panel TV. Your Smart phone becomes a mouse to move around and enter data as others look on . The team works together and each member has the opportunity to share their views and opinions as well as enter data that is relevant to the discussion.

MousePuter uses several technologies that are novel and unique to accomplish these tasks.

1) It is able to display a very small screen from a PDA or Smart Phone to available displays that are found in most homes
and offices without losing resolution.
2) It is able to connect wirelessly any display via an adapter device that connects with displays via a HDMI, VGA or USB ports.
3) It provides security for privacy.
4) It integrates mouse technology into standard PDA or Smart Phones.

General Information
Computing is steadily decreasing in size and cost. Most cellphones have more computing and communication power than some mainframes of 30 years ago. The limiting factor on such small computing devices is their ability to interact. Fingers will not get smaller and eyes will not focus more sharply. We envision an interaction model where the user carries minimal interactive capability and exploits displays and input devices as they are encountered in the environment. This requires applications that can function effectivily in the presence of a variety of display and input scales.

The Market
There are many handheld cell phones/computers being sold today. There are more PDAs being sold than laptop computers. Highly portable handheld devices are the future of personal computing.

Handheld computers are not good for real work because they screens and keyboards are too small. Comfortable keyboards cannot get smaller because human fingers will not get smaller. Screens need to match the eyes of actual people and they need to fit within the energy requirements dictated by physics.

Screens, projectors and desktop computers will have a display server installed. This is software that will be given away for free either over the Internet or installed directly from the handheld device. (Think of display server as similar in purpose to a Flash player) The handheld then will connect via WiFi to any display or combination of displays that has the display server software installed. Using the handheld/display server combination the user can now interact on big screens with real keyboards. Wherever a handheld user finds a display server or can install a display server, the handheld now behaves like a full-scale device. The WiFi connection allows combinations of screens that go way beyond current VGA connections used in most conference rooms.
