Auto-Tuning Amplifier

Introduction In wireless communications and wireless products, architectures can be complex and space-consuming due to the need for circuitry that receives signals from multiple bands. System complexity and increased size leads to higher costs; thus, design improvements that save space and decrease complexity are valuable. Technology description Researchers at the University of Washington have developed an amplifier that is capable of locking its tuning to a reference frequency. Thus, the same amplifier can be used for multiple bands, alleviating a current problem in wireless communication whereby receiving signals from several bands typically requires separate amplifiers. Tank circuits are used in both the matching and the load sections of amplifiers. In this application, resonant tank circuits enable the reuse of the same amplifier for multiple bands. Generally, this design has applications in radio frequency (RF) and microwave amplifiers, low noise amplifiers (LNA’s), multi-band LNA’s, and input and output matching networks. Business opportunity This system design can be used in wireless communication and wireless products. Wireless communications, especially wireless telephony, continues to be a very strong market with over $200 billion in projected revenue by 2008 (10% annual growth rate), with over 200 million wireless subscribers. Stage of development Initial circuit design is complete with some initial data obtained. Intellectual property position The technology is available for licensing. The UW is currently reviewing this technology for worldwide patent protection. For more information on this technology contact:
