A P. falciparum Merozoite Surface Protein-1 Malaria Vaccine Produced in Transgenic Plants
Description This technology describes a method of producing transgenic tobacco plants that synthesize the complete P. falciparum MSP1 p42 polypeptide. This structure of the plant MSP1 p42 recombinant polypeptide appears to be similar to that obtained from P. falciparum as well as from the baculovirus expression system.
Applications Malaria vaccine
Main Advantages Production of a malaria vaccine by transgenic plants would reduce raw material costs and make the vaccine more affordable for distribution to developing countries. In addition, it would also abrogate the risk of potential contamination of the vaccine with animal pathogens.
