Microfabricated Substrate for the Collection of DNA (Micro-sandpaper)
Reference#: P02331

Conventional forensic DNA detection technologies require hair, skin, blood, or tissue samples to be taken from people in order to be processed. This is commonly done using a mouth swab or blood sample.

Low copy number DNA analysis techniques have been developed for use on degraded material, very small stains, and items that may contain skin cells, such as items that have been touched by an offender. APL scientists have developed a substrate to removed cells from the outermost layer of the epidermis for DNA extraction and analysis. This substrate consists of a microengineered array of piercing and scraping structures with dimensions such that they scrape off and collect the strateum corneum, the outmost superficial layer of skin. Specifically, the array consists of tissue coring structures which extract microcore samples of the skin and scraping structures which scrape and collect skin cells. APL scientists have developed a process for fabricating these structures on a flexible substrate, allowing the array to conform to any surface.
