Flexible Architecture Receiver for GPS
This software-controlled buffer captures the incoming sampled RF signals at a rate consistent with the GPS bandwidth and can provide previously captured samples to the tracking hardware in batches at rates consistent with FPGA/ASIC technology. The ratio of tracking rate to the capture rate provides significant leverage permitting a single hardware channel to act as a full multi-channel receiver without multiplexing loss. This approach also permits the implementation of a minimum-acuisition-time receiver without multiplexing loss. The normally sequential steps of signal acquitition can occur "instantly" by repeated "playbacks" of buffered data. This feature is well-suited for applications in which GPS signals have sporadic availability (e.g., urban canyon).
