Methods for Implementing Quantum Logic Operations Using Polarizing Beam Splitters

Quantum computers are expected to perform numerical calculations that are not feasible using conventional computers. They are expected to factor large numbers in an efficient manner, which would have a major impact on cryptography and secure communications.

JHU/APL’s new method implements quantum logic operations using linear optical elements, such as beam splitters and phase shifters. Optical fibers can transmit quantum bits of information (qubits) over large distances for communications purposes or over shorter distances to connect the quantum logic and memory devices in a quantum computer. This invention makes use of polarization-encoded qubits, in which the logical values of 0 and 1 are represented by the two polarizations of a single photon. The polarization encoding allows the construction of quantum logic devices that are simple, stable and reliable. Two logic devices of this kind, a quantum parity check and a destructive controlled-NOT gate, have already been experimentally demonstrated.
