University of California, Davis researchers have characterized cotton transcription factors essential to controlling cotton fiber gene expression, of such traits as yield, length, fineness, uniformity and strength.
The transcription factors offer an opportunity to create novel transgenic cotton plants with needed improvements in fiber quantity and quality to meet the multiple challenges of increased production costs, deceased acreage, and more demanding spinning technologies.
The UC transcription factors are derived from cotton ovules that are differentially regulated during ovule and fiber development. This invention could potentially enable the bioengineering of cotton plants with longer, stronger, and finer fibers.
