Sober Selfie Challenge Aims to Reduce Alcohol Consumption

January 6, 2016 By IdeaConnection

blog-jan-13-16Young Australians in Victoria are being invited to take the #SoberSelfie Challenge – that is ditching the booze for a weekend or fortnight period and taking photos of their hangover-free days.

The project was a winner in the VicHealth Innovation Challenge, a crowdsourcing initiative for ideas that promote healthy living, organized by the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation(VicHealth).

With research showing that three quarters of Australians see alcohol as a serious issue facing communities, VicHealth decided it was time to address the problem in innovative ways. So it set up a crowdsourcing challenge for ideas to help change Victoria’s drinking culture by either reducing the amount that people drink or by increasing the acceptability of saying ‘no’ to more drink.

The #SoberSelfie Challenge was one of four winners to receive startup funding. This free initiative is run by the Australian Drug Foundation and invites people to wave goodbye to lost days due to hangovers. It is primarily aimed at 18-30-year-olds.

As well as posting photos to the site of the good times being enjoyed while sober, participants can win individual prizes and earn money for any sports club they may be affiliated to.

The other winners of the VicHealth Innovation Challenge were:

Be a Brother – a social media campaign aimed at African men aged 16-25 in Melbourne’s western region

Enough is Enough: Emergency Department Clinicians Action on Reducing Alcohol Harm – an app that will allow emergency department clinicians to identify hazardous drinkers and offer them Brief Intervention or referral to HelloSundayMorning.org to reduce their alcohol consumption

Peer Modelling: Drinking Culture Change Intervention – an alternative to legal penalties for alcohol-related offences. The project targets 20-24 year-olds who get into trouble through their drinking. They will be required to watch an online program featuring video interviews with young people talking about how they have successfully reduced their own harmful alcohol consumption.
