Open Innovation Challenge to Improve Air Travel: Winners Announced

September 16, 2016 By IdeaConnection

frankfurt2Several airline passengers have a little more money in the bank thanks to an open innovation competition in Germany.

They were the winners of the inaugural Frankfurt Airport Innovation Challenge, which asked members of the public from anywhere in the world for their ideas to improve the passenger experience.

Participants could submit their ideas in English or German to the competition’s website. In total, 624 ideas were received, which elicited 3,520 comments and 3,780 reviews. The submissions were assessed by a five-member jury of industry and innovation experts.

They selected six winners, with the overall winner receiving a check for 3,000 euros (approximately USD $3,300).

Overall Winner

First place was awarded to Innovation Space, a dedicated room where passengers can discuss specific issues and problems and develop ideas together.  The room can not only be used by the airport operator, but also by local startups.

Claudia Uhe, head of corporate development, environment and sustainability for Fraport and the chairwoman of the jury, said: “The idea provides an excellent platform for direct customer feedback and the opportunity to exploit the great potential of creative minds from around the globe who come together here at the airport and in the region.”

Implementation

Airport bosses are now going to examine the practicability of the six winning concepts with the hope of implementing all of them in the near future.

Such was the success of the open innovation challenge that the airport is looking to launch future challenges to help improve passengers’ travel experiences.
