When it comes to inventing things, where would you be without a spanner, monkey wrench and a lathe?  TechShop, America’s first nationwide open access workshop provides its members with free use of a vast array of design and fabrication tools to build the things they’ve always wanted to.

And it has just teamed up with Ford Motor Company to open up a new DIY workshop in Detroit.

Innovation is an expensive process and for the lone inventor one of the biggest barriers is access to the tools and capabilities to bring products from the drawing board into reality. TechShop is based on the gym membership model and is open to everyone regardless of their skills and experience.

The Grand Opening in Detroit is taking place this weekend and came about with help from Ford. The motor company is keen for its employees to take advantage of what TechShop has to offer.

“Innovation and invention are at the core of Ford Motor Company,” said Bill Coughlin, CEO of Ford Global Technologies.

“When I heard about TechShop and how they are inspiring and helping a new generation of inventors, I had to find a way to lure them to Detroit. Not only is it a great opportunity for the community, but it will be a strategic tool to spur creativity and new ideas within the Ford engineering community to help us continue to build our intellectual property portfolio.”

Accelerate Innovation

Ford Global Technologies is going to be enhancing its companywide Employee Patent Incentive Award program so that inventors will be given three-month free membership to TechShop Detroit if they submit an innovation suitable for patent consideration.

By having the open access workshop in such close proximity Ford engineers, designers and scientists will be able to quickly build their prototypes, something the company hopes will keep it at the forefront of automotive innovation.
