What a Performance! Opera by You Awards Announced

May 1, 2012 By IdeaConnection

It’s almost the home stretch; the two year Opera by You project will soon be entering the direction process, prior to its premiere in July.

Over 400 members from all over the world have taken part in this community opera project and the most active participants have just been awarded travel packages to the Savonlinna Opera Festival and world premiere of Free Will on 21st July 2012.

Since 2010 the open innovation project has been relying on the public for ideas for music, plot, lyrics, dialogue and staging. Every aspect of the piece is being crowdsourced, and it will be performed in the superlative setting of St. Olaf’s castle by an 80 member choir and a symphony orchestra.

Before the curtain goes up there are still opportunities to take part and  prizes to be won. These are the three Jorma Ollila Innovation Awards which will acknowledge  special activeness and innovative ideas.

If you want to get a little taster of the project, the piano score can be downloaded from here.

And the libretto of the choir is being discussed here.

An Opera by the Masses for the Masses

The story so far…

The crowd first collaborated on the opera’s plot and name. They selected the title ‘Free Will’ and the story finds God fed up with all the misery and suffering that he sees and so he convenes a meeting with the angels to decide what to do. They come up with a plan to send a few dead geniuses such as Oscar Wide and Amadeus Mozart back to Earth to make things better and create world peace. But will they succeed in their mission?
