Crowdsourcing an Emoji for Forgiveness

September 26, 2019 By IdeaConnection

Crowdsourcing emojisYou're texting or on social media and have done or said something silly and want to acknowledge your actions with an emoji. What do you do?

If you're looking for an icon to lighten the mood while asking for forgiveness you won’t find one. Not yet, anyway. But that may change.

A number of charities and organizations in Finland are crowdsourcing to find the ideal emoji for such occasions.

Yes, you can use the symbol for praying hands, but it doesn’t quite do the job. Nor do any others.

On the website created to raise awareness for the crowdsourcing campaign, called #forgivemoji, it explains: ‘At the moment, there are 3,019 official emojis. There’s a kissing cat, an astronaut, a magnet and three kinds of vampires. But there’s no emoji that says “I forgive you”… for now!

Finding the Right Emoji

Once all the suggestions have been collected, a proposal will be sent by the end of the year to the Unicode Consortium in California. This is a non-profit corporation devoted to developing, maintaining, and promoting software internationalization standards and data.

Suggestions So Far…

Among the suggestions so far sent into the crowdsourcing project are:

  • A band-aid plaster forming a cross over a red heart.
  • An olive branch on top of a heart.
  • Two hands clasped in front of a heart.
  • An upturned hand with a heart icon hovering above it.

Anyone with a proposal for an emoji for forgiveness can submit it to the #forgivemoji website. In addition to sending in your own idea, you can also vote for your favorite submissions.
