Crowdsourcing the Future of New Zealand’s Flag

May 5, 2015 By IdeaConnection

nz1New Zealand is on the hunt for a new flag and is asking its citizens to help.

The New Zealand Flag Consideration Project is a crowdsourcing effort for the public to have a say in the flag’s design. Although it has been changed before, this is the first time New Zealanders will have an input into its future.

The project has a number of facets to it, including discussion groups, public workshops and a roadshow for people to express what they, as New Zealanders stand for.  It is hoped that these values will guide those who want to suggest a flag design.

Unfurling Flag Design Suggestions

Between 5 May and 16 July 2015, New Zealanders can suggest ideas and submit their creative pieces to the project’s website. There is a list of guidelines to help participants, which includes details of internationally accepted principles on the design of flags.

Decision Time

The public will be able to vote on the final flag design in two separate referendums.  In the first, they will be asked to rank four flag alternatives (from the most to the least preferred) put forward by the project’s judging panel.

Flying the New National Flag

In the second referendum, the public will be asked to choose between the current New Zealand flag and the preferred alternative design from the first referendum.  The flag with the most votes will become the official flag.

Our flag should reflect the two signatory groups of the Treaty of Waitangi, the British and the Maori. The red white and blue colours of the current flag with predominant blue background should be retained.

Awesome that the NZ govt is trying a bold new way to extract a result for our NZ flag. An amazing opportunity to engage a country and turn public chatter into meaningful results. Go New Zealand!
