The International Space Apps Challenge is Coming

April 14, 2016 By IdeaConnection

spaceapps1NASA is gearing up for what is billed to be one of the world’s largest hackathons. Between April 22-24 this year, members of the public from all round the world can take part in the International Space Apps Challenge.

The huge crowdsourcing exercise will involve participants developing mobile apps, software, hardware, platform solutions and more to contribute to space missions and to help solve pressing problems here on Earth.

The main hub for this year’s event will be in Pasadena, California, while local events will take place simultaneously in nearly 200 locations across 72 countries.

The space agency is keen to point out that the event isn’t just for coders; it’s also for students, beginners, engineers and anyone who is passionate about solving problem and wants to make a global impact. NASA also wants to see more women involved.

“We’re reaching out to women’s organizations influential in the data and maker communities to participate, and we encourage women-led teams in the hackathon,” commented Deborah Diaz, chief technology officer for information technology.

There are several evolving mission categories in which challenges will be listed, and they include:

  • Aeronautics
  • Space Station
  • Solar System
  • Journey to Mars
  • Technology

This is the fifth iteration of the space apps challenge and among the winning solutions from last year were:  NYSpaceTag which allows government agencies to see their data used across different organizations, and CROP (Cultures Risks Observation and Prevention Platform), a user-friendly platform for farmers to monitor their lands.
