EVERYDAY HEALTH, INC. PAUL SLAVINA smart watch for patients prone to convulsions, seizures and tremors, and a smart monitoring shirt able to check people’s heart rate, temperature and activity were among the big winners of the inaugural Everyday Health Awards for Innovation.

The new annual prize not only honors outstanding technological innovations that aim to improve health outcomes, but also acts as a catalyst to help innovators achieve great things in the medical field.

“We are excited to announce that the Everyday Health Awards will be an annual competition recognizing those who are moving the digital healthcare needle forward,” commented Paul Slavin, Chief Operating Officer, Everyday Health.

The awards ceremony was held on January 9th at the Digital Health Summit, at 2014 International CES (a global consumer electronics and consumer technology tradeshow).

The winning innovations included:

SmartWatch by Smart Monitor – this is a wearable device that’s used in combination with a smartphone app to act as an alert system for patients prone to convulsions. If the watch detects repetitive, shaking motions it will record the episode and within seconds alert people in a chosen contacts list about these abnormal motions.

The Smart Monitoring Shirt by Cityzen Sciences – this contains sensors that can monitor numerous physiological activities. First developed for sports uses, the shirt will soon be able to monitor people’s health from their homes.

The Dexcom G4 PLATINUM – lays claim to being the longest Continuous Glucose Monitor sensor approved for up to 7 days’ use. The device can provide data up to 288 times in a 24-hour period and alerts users when they’re outside of their target zone.
