Crowd Promotion of Social Causes

It’s being referred to as the world’s first “crowdspeaking platform”, a social media innovation that lets the crowd speak out with one voice on social causes.

Thunderclap is a new initiative from product development studio De-De that allows people to come together to speak on a particular issue through a mass-shared single message.

It works in a similar way to crowdfunding in that users start a Thunderclap for free and invite followers to support it.  They also set a target number of people to support the cause and a deadline.

If the target number of supporters is not achieved the message will not be sent, but if it is, the Thunderclap is sent from the social media accounts of all those who supported it and reaches all their followers and friends at once.

A More Powerful Message

The creators of the site say that the simultaneous sending of messages in a unified voice will be harder to ignore.

The inaugural Thunderclap was sent by Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi and was an appeal to save the Dodd-Frank financial regulation law. It had received the 500 supporters it needed within hours of going live.

The service started on Twitter, but was suspended within 24 hours. It is now available on Facebook, and Thunderclap’s creators hope to spread to other networks soon, including Twitter again.

As well as being used by supporters of good causes the Thunderclap platform may also find favor with companies and brands seeking to get their messages out.
