Crowdsourcing Blood Donations

December 17, 2013 By IdeaConnection

bloodWe’ve seen several examples of how crowdsourcing can be deployed to save lives such as using the crowd to create a database of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the Philadelphia area and social media-based projects to improve disaster relief.

Now the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) is launching what it describes as the world’s first crowdsourcing app for blood donations – the Red Cross Connection.

The mobile app will alert blood donors of emergency low stock levels in real time and prompt them to donate. According to the SRC every donation saves three lives. The app will also give users the opportunity to encourage members of their social media networks to donate blood.

Keep Track of Donations

App users will be able to keep track of the donations they have made and the number of lives they have saved.  In addition, the software program allows users to locate their nearest donation center and receive invitations to Red Cross events and donation drives.

The app is available for free at the Apple App Store.

Life-Saving Technologies

This isn’t the first life-saving app that the SRC has launched. Last year the organization introduced the “Rapid Rescue” app to enable a prompt response to emergencies.  The innovative location-based iPhone application allows an injured person to send out an SOS to first aiders within a two kilometer radius.

“The Singapore Red Cross is also always looking for innovative ways to provide critical services to the community,” said Singapore Red Cross secretary—general Benjamin William.
