Developing a New Open Innovation Model

November 21, 2013 By IdeaConnection

slindOpen innovation thought leader and author of Making Open Innovation Work Stefan Lindegaard is busy developing a new OI model on how companies can embrace open innovation – and he would like your input.

In a recent blog post on his 15inno site, Stefan raises the point that there are too few processes and models to help companies wanting to engage with open innovation. This is something he wants to change.

So far his model (a work in progress) is based on seven steps which include:

Why Open Innovation? Looking at “why and how a company should embrace open innovation in the context of their innovation culture.”

Internal Readiness: Gauging internal readiness by looking at people, culture and processes.

External Readiness: Is the industry a company is in actually ready for open innovation? What are the drivers and obstacles to OI within that industry? Also, are there good and bad case studies to learn from?

Skills and Mind-set: The change from closed to open innovation requires new skills and new mind-sets. Questions to consider here include how any shortcomings can be addressed and what the training should involve.

In the true spirit of open innovation, Stefan is keen for any interested parties to provide ideas and have their say. The resulting workbook and new model of open innovation will be available to all under a Creative Commons license.
