Calling all green entrepreneurs and innovators, the Dutch Postcode Lottery is once again open for business and is challenging people all over the world to come up with sustainable and creative business plans.

There are size-able carrots on offer for participants with €500,000 (approx. USD $628,000) for the winner to realise his or her business dreams, and €200,000 to one or two runners-up.

The open innovation contest is open now through to Tuesday 31 July.

“Because of climate change, we face the challenge of embracing a new green lifestyle,” said Marieke van Schaik, Managing Director of the Dutch Postcode Lottery. “One clever, creative idea can make a huge difference. That’s why we’re calling on people all over the world to send in their green business plans. With the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge, we seek to make sure ground-breaking sustainable solutions actually get developed and reach the market.”

Previous Winners

Previous winners include Greensulate, a biodegradable insulation material made of mushrooms. Each cubic inch of Greensulate contains eight miles of interconnected mycelia and provides an environmentally friendly alternative to rigid board insulation material made from petrochemicals, the production of which involves considerable CO2 emissions.

Last year’s winner was Nick Christy from Australia for his Water Recycling Shower that slashes water use and energy costs by 70% without compromising on comfort.
