How the Crowd Can Breathe New Life into Urban Spaces

July 23, 2012 By IdeaConnection

Money is far too tight to mention so local councils are forced to make spending cuts and urban regeneration projects are shelved or scaled back. But an innovative crowdfunding website can help communities regenerate parts of their towns or cities that are in the most desperate need.

Spacehive is a relatively new London-based crowdfunding platform that allows projects to be posted aimed at improving public spaces. It’s a simple and easy way for people to transform where they live.

Spacehive claims to be the world’s first funding platform for neighbourhood improvement projects and anyone can propose, support and fund project proposals such as local residents with brilliant ideas, design professionals with imaginative visions, businesses looking for a community legacy and public bodies needing help to finance capital projects.

How does it Work?

Anyone can create a project page on the Spacehive website and pitch an idea and attract supporters. Once the project has been fully developed it can be sent to Spacehive for verification. If that goes smoothly the fundraising can begin. Money is only paid out if the fundraising goals are met within the specified timeframe.

Successful projects have included filling a funding void to help a deprived town in Wales build a community center and a proposal to convert a barge into a 3-meter high mock of Queen Elizabeth II’s head for the celebrations to mark her sixty years on the throne.

At the time of writing this post there is a proposal for an exhibition that will showcase ideas for improving Tottenham an area of north London that in 2011 was the epicentre for rioting that spread to other places in the UK.
