questionmarkFor years, man has been making predictions about the next big thing around the corner, the science and technology revolutions that are going to enhance our lives, principally by making them easier, more fun and less stressful. It’s a risky business as unfortunately for the speakers, many future predictions crash and burn. Remember Betamax anyone?

Still, that doesn’ stop people from staring into the future to envisage what’s coming next. IBM has revealed its predictions for the five biggest innovations that are going to change our lives within the next five years. They are:

The classroom will learn you – IBM believes that in the near future, teachers will be equipped with smart tools to learn about every student, allowing them to provide tailor made education packages to them.

Buying local will beat online – retailers will rely on artificial intelligence and technology such as augmented reality inside stores to offer a better buying experience than online sites.

dnaDoctors will use DNA to keep you well – this will allow the medical profession to create more specific and personalized treatment for patients with diseases such as cancer. A person’s DNA could be scanned to find the right therapeutic approach.

A digital guardian will protect you online – to help counter online fraud a personal digital guardian will be able to verify an individual’s identity online across multiple devices. It will also be able to detect any differences in behavior that might suggest that someone has stolen that person’s identity.

The city will help you live in it – IBM reckons that by 2050, 70% of populations will be city dwellers. Automation will be the way to cope with that growth: “IBM predicts that cities will digest information freely provided by citizens to place resources where they are needed.”
