Mobile Phone Operators Should Embrace Open Innovation

400px-Young_woman_using_a_mobile_phoneTo remain competitive and secure their futures, mobile phone operators have two choices. Embrace open innovation and cloud computing.

That’s the view of researcher Yrjö Raivio of Aalto University School of Science.

His doctoral dissertation for the Aalto University Department of Computer Science and Engineering Raivio presents operators with a number of strategic recommendations which were picked up by Phys.Org.

Although many global mobile operators are in a reasonably comfortable position right now, they have seen a decline in their incomes. But they need to act soon if they are not to go the way of the Dodo.

Opening Up to Outsiders

According to Raivio, mobile operators should follow the example of Internet companies such as Amazon and Google and open up their data to outside developers, and even competitors.

He also advocates that they should transfer and distribute their operations and services into cloud computing services. In such an open environment innovators can create new services and products from the platforms and open interfaces of operators.

And there’s another way innovation could be given a rocket-sized boost.

“Operators have a great deal of assets, which go largely unused, in their closed information systems,” said Raivio. “For instance information about the profile data of operators’ customers could be opened for developers to create new exciting services.”

One of the biggest challenges though, will be to convince mobile operators of the need to open up parts of their operations. But it will be of vital importance.

“Constant experimentation and the power of the community will be crucial. Only with proficient tools and by working together we can create the brightest gems”
