NASA Gives Innovation a Stellar Boost

April 28, 2015 By IdeaConnection

orionYou may never get to ride in a spacecraft or walk on the moon, but you can get your hands on lots of NASA data to help you come up with ground-breaking innovations.

The space agency is giving away thousands of terrestrial and space-based data sets through its NASA Data Portal.

There are currently more than 9,000 data sets and they include satellite images of the Earth and probes that have scanned the far reaches of the Solar System.

Among the rich collection of material are thousands of images of Apollo-Saturn missions as well as ice core records and ocean and lake records from our own planet.

Huge Potential

Engineers, scientists, developers and all manner of innovators can access the data and use it to come up with novel apps. The untapped potential is huge.

Although spinoff technologies have never been NASA’s primary mission, space research has led to numerous technological advances with real-world applications, such as memory foams and magnetic resonance imaging.  Who knows what these data sets will help us to do?

Of its data portal NASA says:

“We have a new Open Innovation team to continue NASA’s efforts to meet the White House mandate to set our data free – in a format that is useful for you. In doing so, we hope to spark your creative juices and equip you with tools to innovate your world – whether local, global, or interstellar – leveraging our digital assets.”
