tidepodsOpen innovation can be a gateway to breakthrough products and ideas for companies no matter their size or industry. From novel food products and clean energy solutions to new laundry goods and crowdsourced cars, the roster of open innovation success stories is long.

The solutions, companies and industries may well be different, but what unites them is a willingness to engage diverse knowledge sources, and a steadfast refusal to be stuck in a rut with a ‘not invented here’ mindset.

Here’s a small collection of some of the open innovation success stories we have featured on ideaConnection:

Improved solar cell efficiency: The 2013 MIT Clean Energy Prize was awarded to a student start-up from the University of Arkansas for their patent-pending technology (Hydrogen Selective Emitter – HSE) that aims to increase solar cell efficiency by 15 percent.

A new Procter and Gamble laundry product: Tide Pods is a line of highly concentrated liquid detergent tablets that P&G describes as its biggest laundry innovation in 25 years. The three-chamber tabs came about through a partnership with a company that specializes in water-soluble film delivery systems.

A revolutionary new deodorant: Nivea, the multinational skincare corporation worked with consumers to co-create a new deodorant called Invisible for Black and White. The product provides 48-hour antiperspirant protection and counteracts white and yellow deodorant stains.

The world’s first crowdsourced car – In 2010 Fiat launched the Fiat Mio which lays claim to being the world’s first crowdsourced car. More than 17,000 people from around the world submitted 11,000 ideas to the project. In the UK, French automobile manufacturer Citroen built a crowdsourced car with members of the public via Facebook. Through a special app, users were able to help the car maker decide on the model’s exterior and interior look and equipment complement.
