800px-A380-trent900Rolls Royce, the aerospace and power systems company has launched an open innovation program in India to find, buy and/or license technologies and techniques outside its usual fields of operation.

The India Open Innovation program (IOiN-RR) will also help Indian companies to leverage their skills, services and talents globally.

The program is focusing on three areas of great importance to Rolls Royce:

  • Test and measurement
  • Repair, inspection and servicing technologies
  • Novel designs and manufacture of large components and tools

Rolls Royce is welcoming submissions from Indian companies that have been in existence for at least two years. The solutions should be beyond the concept stage – somewhere between prototype and ready for market.

In the first instance organizations are being invited to register their interest via email to FICCI ([email protected]) or NASSCOM ([email protected]). A short screening process then ensues and those that make it through will be invited to register online and submit a detailed proposal.

Forging Relationships

If the solutions are what Rolls Royce is looking for, the company will formalize the relationship with the provider organization.  This could range from acquisition to collaboration.

“India is home to some of the world’s most innovative small and medium sized companies,” said Kishore Jayaraman, President, Rolls-Royce India. “We are looking to tap into that depth of expertise and knowledge to discover new solutions that can help us advance our own products, processes and services.”

Rolls Royce launched a similar project in Japan last year, and will be seeking to operate programs in other countries in the years ahead, although a firm timetable for this ambition has not been published.
