Thanksgiving Turkeys Inspire Innovators

November 28, 2013 By IdeaConnection

800px-Thanksgiving_TurkeyAs millions of Americans tuck into turkey on today’s Thanksgiving Day, The Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch has provided some very digestible reading material on how America has become a hotbed of turkey innovation.

Dozens of the country’s inventors hold patents for different ways of cooking the plump-breasted bird.

Among them is 67-year-old Bryan Hirokane, a retired mechanical engineer who has a patent for an innovation that debones turkeys.

Other patents (including pending ones) highlighted by the article include wind guards in case you decide to cook the turkey outside, turkey cookers and a compact rotisserie.

Then there is Diego Decal’s patented turkey baster with a curved end that allows cooks to baste a turkey without having to pull it all the way out of the oven.

Challenges

As every inventor knows, turning a patent into a marketable product that brings home the bacon is a Herculean feat.

Bryan Hirokane has spent years pitching supermarkets and turkey processors to no avail. He’s now gone online and created a YouTube video about his invention. You can watch it here:

One of the difficulties faced by turkey cooking innovators according to the Market Watch article is lack of need. Americans just don’t cook enough turkeys throughout the year. For many families it’s an annual treat.

However, this might not be such a drawback for some inventors.  Diego Decal has discovered that his turkey baster is good for unclogging the evaporator drain on his air conditioner. Perhaps it could be sold to an AC company he wonders.
