It looks like it is actually going to happen. Blueseed – a floating technology community where entrepreneurs and innovators can gain access to Silicon Valley resources without needing a US work permit – is going to set sail before 2014, the company behind it has officially announced.
The large vessel will be located 12 nautical miles from the coast of California, in non-territorial waters and provide living and working arrangements and amenities for the world’s smartest and most adventurous hi-tech entrepreneurs and visionaries.
They will be able to work in an intellectual furnace right next door to the planet’s leading hi-tech hub but without having to worry about visa and immigration laws. The aim is to bring the world’s most talented entrepreneurs into one community, which will have close links to Silicon Valley.
Transport to the US mainland will be via a twice-daily ferry and rent aboard the ship for living and working spaces will start from approx. USD $1,600 per month.
The ship’s final design has not yet been finalized but in mock-ups it appears to be a large floating office complex.
Individuals and start-ups wanting to set up business on the high seas can register their interest now by filling out a survey on the company’s website.
According to Blueseed, more than 150 technology start-ups have so far shown interest.
