To Boldly Crowdfund a NASA Trailer for New Star Trek Movie

March 30, 2013 By IdeaConnection

473px-Ap4-s67-50531The good folks at the Aerospace Industries Association have just reached their funding goal to premier a video promoting space exploration.  It will be seen on the big screen before the showing of the next Star Trek movie – “Star Trek Into Darkness”.

The original plan was to raise sufficient funds to show a 30-second NASA trailer entitled “We are the Explorers’” in 50 theaters in major movie markets across the United States.

Initially, the crowd was asked to dip into its pockets for $33,000.

Raised Target

That target was reached within six days thanks to the generosity of more than 1,000 donors. There are 33 funding days left and the aim now is to raise $94,000 in total to put the promo in 750 theaters.

The trailer has already been produced, in fact it’s a 30-second edit of a longer video that was published in February 2012.

“By donating to this campaign, you’re making a very powerful statement about the widespread enthusiasm that exists for space programs,” the campaign states.

“A crowdfunding campaign is the best vehicle to deliver this message. By reaching our goal, we not only enable a first-of-its-kind ad campaign, we also demonstrate that countless people support a strong space program that’s in development.”

Exciting Perks

Perks for supporting the campaign include a space shuttle mission patch, a digital copy of the trailer, a black and white photo of Al Shepard’s Apollo 14 spacesuit, and a space shuttle lapel pin.
