Use Social Media to Select Your Seat Partner on Flights

January 6, 2012 By IdeaConnection

Airline travel can really suck when you’re stuck next to the kicking kid, the loud bore or the arm rest hog.

Recognising that this can make journeys unbearable for its customers Dutch airline KLM will soon be launching its ‘Meet and Seat’ service that will enable passengers to choose who they sit next to based on the LinkedIn or Facebook profiles of  their fellow travellers.

The new service will be available to all, but you will only be able to select your in-flight neighbor if the other person has signed up to participate.

So how does it work? Passengers connect to LinkedIn and Facebook during online check-in and select their seat buddy based on their profession, mutual interests, business connections and appearance.

The airline believes it will provide the perfect opportunity for people to network, and will make journeys potentially more profitable and interesting.  However, many commentators are predicting it will become more of a mile-high matchmaking service (a 2011 survey by Skyscanner revealed that found 45 per cent of passengers admitted to flirting with other passengers during flights).

KLM is still fine tuning some features of ‘Meet and Seat’ and has not said whether there will be a charge for it.

While they finalise their offering irreverent Taiwanese animated news service Next Media Animation has imagined how some customers might use the service.
