When a Doctor has a Problem…

July 20, 2012 By IdeaConnection

A new cloud-based marketplace has been launched called ScrubStorm LLC that helps doctors and clinicians tackle medical innovation problems and challenges.

The web-based initiative lets them post their problems and provide a solution or open it up to the crowd. Companies, contractors and investors also take part and the idea is to develop and commercialize viable solutions for unmet medical needs.

After signing a confidentiality agreement companies or individuals can generate ideas and review and critique the solutions others have come up with. Investors can fund ideas they like and companies can license and commercialize the resulting products.

ScrubStorm says that while clinicians have many powerful ideas on how the tools they use can be improved, very few actually have the opportunity to work with device manufacturers. This means that thousands of ideas never even get as far as the drawing board.

Democratizing Medical Interventions

The initial idea of ScrubStorm President Ken Solovay was to have one large open site where doctors would join for free and companies would pay a subscription for access to their ideas.

But as he worked on the site he found that although companies were willing to pay if there was a large body of doctors, medical professionals wouldn’t put their ideas forward until they saw which organizations and investors were involved.

So what has now been developed are  private versions of the site where companies can invite their own clinicians and partners to join. One such has just been launched at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

“It’s really good for accelerators, hospitals and medical device companies that want to work with their own companies and resources,” Solovay said.
