The Challenge relates to underground cables in High Voltage distribution networks in urban areas. More specifically, the Challenge addresses the deterioration of the outer sheath/layer that is made of lead tube. When this layer approaches the end of the material’s lifetime (~40 years) deterioration can be found (cracks or holes, for example, as a result of corrosion), not only in the form of small, discrete damage but also as continuous deterioration that affects long lengths of the cables.
