According to the World Health Organization in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight and 650 million were obese. People who are overweight or obese are predisposed to developing metabolic diseases and have an increased risk of mortality.

Although diet and physical activity have a direct effect on weight, genetic factors can also play a role. Therefore, Novo Nordisk is looking to identify gene combinations that may provide protection from obesity and associated metabolic disorders.
