When proposing the problem, it's important to give all details about processes, environment conditions, numeric variables, photos of the part failed and the chemicals involved in the process. Also, it´s expected to have all the technical certificates of the component to know about the fabrication properties before starting in service.

1. Analysis of the root of the failure and the process effect in each case
2. Using advanced equipment as SEM and Interferometer to measure pits and surface morphology, for example when analyzing corrosion failures in drill pipes,tubings, parts of refinery plants.

Edwar Vinces's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. Automotive industry:
    1.2 In the failure analysis of vehicular-sahfts fractured during service due to fatigue. The shaft of transmission in the Metrobus of Caracas, was fractured due to the irregular distribution of the stresses and vibrations. This component had an inadequate heat treatment along its lenght.
  2. My experience is focused in differents areas:
    1. Oil and gas industry:
    1.1. I worked in the failure analysis of drillstring parts after a fracture event, like stabilizers, drillbits, drillpipes. I found the cause of the fracture in the drillstring. It was due to the excesive torsional torque applied in the drilling process.
    1.3 Metallic parts of refineries plants fractured under high stresses.
    1.4 In the corrosion area. I found that the degradation and fracture of a tool joint of a drillpipe was due to corrosion- fatigue process.
    1.5 On the other hand, some of the oil well pipes were failed because of the H2S and CO2 corrosion processes.The corrosion morpholgy presented was as pitting and uniform corrosion.
