Problem Solver

Mark Speck

Areas Mark Speck is Knowledgeable in:

I am interested in R&D directed toward essential applications, e.g., biofuels and co-products, carbon capture, nutrition, and environmental remediation.

Techniques Mark Speck Uses:

I use team discussions to think-out-loud about challenges. I read literature to look for analogous problems and approaches. Define goals and desirable outcomes.

Mark Speck's Problem Solving Skills:

  1. Isolate and cultivate microorganisms from highly diverse marine niches.
  2. Define complex microbial communities residing in films and on animals from the marine environment using molecular and classical
  3. Define and generate DNA fingerprints for identifing and tracking microalgae strains within the company's accession.
  4. Develope and define microalgae strains for deployment in industry.
  5. Use the environmental context and role of microbial species collected in the field in order to better utilize them for comercia
  6. Sound understanding and implementation of the "systems approach" to biological problems.
  7. Selecting and cultivating appropriate live microalgae feed for early stage invertebrate and vertebrate aquaculture animals.
  8. Develope new microalgae lines and define and refine current microalgae lines.

Mark Speck's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. I determined how to cultivate more than 30 types of microalgae from lab scale into large scale outdoor photobioreactors.
  2. I developed condition specific strains for customer requested applications.
  3. I use growth data and nutrient analysis to determine proper nutrient ratios on a strain specific basis in order to maximize growth.
  4. I developed high throughput protocols for nutrient analysis of growth media and water samples which saved the company time and money for maintaining continuous microalgae cultures.
  5. I develop growth media that allows the company to grow fastidious organisms for cheaper large scale cost.
