Toby Rossman's Problem Solving Skills:

  1. Cell culture systems
  2. Molecular Biology
  3. Carcinogenesis

Toby Rossman's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. I developed the Microscreen Assay, a bacteria phage test that identifies genotoxic agents. This assay uses small amounts of material added to 96-well plates and can be completed in 2 days, giving dose/response relationships.
  2. I developed an animal model to detect cocarcinogens (agents that are not carcinogenic alone, but enhance other agents).
  3. I have analyzed assays that detect cytotoxicity, and have explained why they do not agree with each other. This is because the assays detect death due to different causes. By increasing the time between exposure and assay, some of these can be reconciled.
  4. My laboratory identified genes that confer resistance to toxicants, using expression arrays followed by knock-down experiments.
