Problem Solver

Vlad Nicolaescu

I am pursuing my PhD in Developmental Biology at the University of Chicago my thesis work focuses on understanding the role of polycomb in the creation of plant totipotent tissue cultures, from root segments. I am creating many innovative transgenic plant systems for specific cell labeling, ChIP, Microscopy, and Cell Sorting to pursue my questions. I enjoy solving problems and designing plans to answer biological questions.

Areas Vlad Nicolaescu is Knowledgeable in:

Plant biology and plant development, with a focus on the root system.

The role of epigenetic controls in maintaining and specifying cell identity, in both plants and animals.

I am interested in cell dedifferentiation in both plant and animals and the role of the Polycomb Pathway in maintaining cell identity.

Vlad Nicolaescu's Problem Solving Skills:

  1. PCR
  2. Cloning
  3. Chromatin Immuno Precipitation
  4. Cell Sorting

Vlad Nicolaescu's Problem Solving Experience:

  1. I designed a transgenic plant that will permanently label individual tissue layers and any cells derived from the labeled tissue in the Arabidopsis root.
  2. I developed a system for growing Arabidopsis plants in a sterile sand environment.
  3. I created a more efficient protocol for my lab to clear roots for DIC microscopy, saving both time and resources.
