I have implemented a two dimensional (2-D) electron confinement to investigate the
current characteristics of the scanning tunneling microscope(STM) by solving the time
dependent Schr ̈odinger equation. I employed FORTRAN language using finite difference
numerical techniques. The results shows that the tip-sample separation lies in a range
of (3.5- 7.0) ̊A where the STM is operational. I observed that existing high resolution
devices have a tip-sample separation of 4.0 ̊A. This is consistent with our findings.
