I was a Head Hunter at one point in time and recruited all types: Marketing, Sales, Engineering, Facilities management, project management, manufacturing, procurement, finance, etc. I enjoyed probing my candidates for problems and issues they faced and how they dealt with them. They often thought I was a subject matter expert in their area, but I asked very basic common sense questions, as this gave me insight into their world and issues they faced. I was able to effective deal with all in an effective manner and was able to provide them with solutions, which some implemented.

In my current job I talk with CEO's running companies with sales between $1 million and $400 million and my job is to probe their particular situation and develop financial solutions that solve their most critical problems. I have helped grow our volume from $0 to $700 million in less than 3 years.

I ask lots of probative questions to make sure I fully understand the complexities of the problems. The obvious solution is formed out of this probative process. I tend to develop simple solutions to complex problems.

  1. My brother worked for American Express in the early 1990's in Fraud prevention. They tracked cards internally, but once they went to the post office they could no longer be tracked. Postal workers were taking out hundreds of cards and selling them to thieves. This was costing American Express hundreds of millions of dollars annually. I suggested that they send the cards out inactive with an 800 number that consumers could call to activate once received. His boss thought it was a terrible idea, but when they did polling with customers it was very well received. This was implemented by American Express and eventually all credit card companies.
