Academic Qualifications

Post Graduate:
1. MSc (Applied Plant Science) 1989-1990
University of London – Wye College, Department of Biological Sciences, Wye, Kent, United Kingdom
Course Details
World Crops –This was a detailed study of the world’s major crops- their evolution and current status in the world. Some of the crops studies were: Wheat, Sorghum, Maize, Rice, and Cotton
Plant Breeding – This backed the studies on World Crops and involved the improvement of crops through the study of programmes aimed at primarily at increased yield, with disease resistance, pest resistance and stress tolerance contributing to yield.
Plant Physiology –a study of the physiological functions characteristic of plants
Plant Virology –an in depth study of the viruses and their adverse effect on plants of economic importance
Plant Microbe Interaction- a study of the damage caused to plants of agricultural importance through plant microbe interactions.
Statistics (Quantitative Biology) - Statistics are critical in making almost all biological studies meaningful.

MSc (Research Project)
Using the Plant Biotechnology technique of Plant Tissue culture as a plant propagating tool I worked on Marigold (Tagetes sp.).The major part of the work involved using herbicides to control vegetative growth and flowering. The main aim of the project was to reduce the period of vegetative growth to the minimum that is necessary for flowering to begin thereby bringing about an early on set of flowering.
In addition to this the efficacy of herbicides in the control of Fusarium spp. were also studied a fungus prevalent on Tagetes spp. in Mexico.
The project was successful in establishing the reduction of the vegetative growth period. More time was needed however for the control of the fungus.
This work was part of a Mexican project on Marigold (Tagetes spp), which is widely used in the food industry as a colorant.
