I created a method of creating a set of round lenses for eyeglasses together with several hundred round (Harry Potter style) frames of various sizes. These could be transported to poor, remote areas of El Salvador, where schoolchildren were refracted and then fitting with eyeglasses on the spot. In this way, the glasses were fit immediately, even for children with astigmatism as well as myopia and hyperopia, rather than having to send the Rx to a lab and then return the glasses to that remote area for distribution weeks later. Often, if the latter method was used, the child could not be found - they often have no formal home address and may go to school only occasionally. The technique worked well and was later adopted by the El Salvadorian government and used to create eyeglasses for thousands of children.
