BROADBAND CONTACTLESS SMART CARD SYSTEM.

Summary:
The proprietary technology eliminates the metallic contacts and covers the smart card with the defensive plastic, and, therefore, protects completely the direct physical attacks on the card and the terminal.
The proprietary technology employs the broadband frequency hopping method for the contactless smart card communication instead of present modulation methods.

Full Description:
The goal of the contactless broadband (spread spectrum) smart card system is to gain the security, to expand the operating range and to increase the convenience in use resulting in expansion of the marketing area wherein any types of the pricing and individual access remote control secure applications requiring the personal identification, authentification and payment are taking place.
Future integration into the broadband wireless access local and metropolitan area networks (ANSI/IEEE Std. 802.xx).

The security and data protection will be gained by the following features:

- Security protocols and commands according to the smart card standard ISO/IEC-7816 (and ISO/IEC-14443 or ISO/IEC 15693 where applicable) are overlapped on the frequency hopping broadband wireless technology, that highly prevents the data interception attempt.
- The broadband (spread spectrum) contactless smart cards will be completely hermetically sealed by plastic. Therefore the direct human access and electrical connection to the integrated microprocessor and cryptocontroller will be absolutely impossible.
- Anti-collision, cross-talk-less and intercept-less communication.

The patented broadband (spread spectrum) smart card system comprises the contactless smart cards and the host communication terminal (which may be integrated into the modern PC, notebook, Wi-Fi router, access point, etc.) which is designed to power remotely the contactless smart cards and then to interrogate the smart cards at the spread spectrum RF band.

Each broadband contactless smart card has two integrated antennas and the electronic chip comprising microprocessor, cryptocontroller and memory, similar to the modern contact smart cards, and the additional RF micro-module designed for the spread-spectrum communication and power regulation of the electronic chip.

First integrated antenna is intended to receive the electromagnetic power with is transmitted at low carrier frequency, e.g. 13.56MHz.
Second integrated antenna is designed for receiving/transmitting data at the high frequency spread spectrum band, at so-called Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) Bands, e.g. 915MHz, 2.4GHz or other.

The host communication terminal radiates the electromagnetic energy at low carrier frequency which is received by first integrated antenna and then the smart card electronic chip converts this received energy into the electric power for the microprocessor operation. Just as microprocessor wakes up, it starts communicate and operate with the host terminal over broadband at high frequency.
Simplified presentation of the BROADBAND CONTACTLESS SMART CARD SYSTEM is shown on the attached pictures.

Compatibility.
Completely compatible to any modern and future security protocols used by the ISO/IEC-7816 contact IC cards.
All interindustry signals, security protocols and commands relating to the contact smart cards (standard ISO/IEC-7816) are preserved and then converted additionally (using modulation / demodulation process) according to the transmission rules over the RF spread spectrum operation.

Applications.
Any types of pricing and individual access remote control secure applications that require personal identification, authentification and payment.
Future integration into a broadband wireless access local and metropolitan area networks (ANSI/IEEE Std. 802.xx).
For example:
- Contactless payment: petrol retailing, both petrol and service station convenience retailing, parking, high-way tall gate, etc.;
- Identification: electronic passport, national ID, social / healthcare, object identification, access control: physical and to the networks and computers.
- Transportation: Ticketing and mass transit, intelligent transportation service, e.g. tracking on highway and in urban traffic, non-stop payment on highway.
- Tracking antitheft ID systems integrated into the vehicles and motor-bikes.

Advantages:

- The broadband contactless smart cards will have the high data interchange rate allows the creating of the applications with the fast mobile objects (e.g. vehicles).
- Security protocols of broadband wireless access local and metropolitan area networks may be integrated directly into Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID, NFC, local and metropolitan area networks
- Compatibility to all interindustry signals, security protocols and commands according the standard ISO/IEC-7816.
- Completely hermetically sealed by plastic contactless smart card that preserves all performances of the modern contact smart cards having microprocessor, cryptocontroller, EEPROM and ROM.
- Protection against frauds and robbers: impossibility of a direct human access to the metallic contacts of a smart card and of a reader/writer since there are no any metallic contacts.

Competition.

No direct competitors yet.
Several vast semiconductor manufacturers had expressed their interest to see the proposed technology to be implemented and then to discuss interrelation.

Problem this idea/invention addresses:
Present Contact Smart Cards, being used in any type of pricing and individual access remote control secure applications that require very high level of personal identification, authentification and payment, have a small chip with gold-plated contacts about 1/2 inch in diameter on the front.
Because smart cards are often used in security-critical situations, they have undergone a fair amount of scrutiny from security hackers. Two main results are worth considering: physical attacks on the card and the terminal problem. In the case of a stored-value card, this sort of attack may even be carried out by the owner of a card. Using the simple connector it is possible to establish communication between PC and smart card. Then, the physical attacks attempt to reverse engineer the card and determine the secret key(s). Hence, the attacker can learn enough information to deduce the entire encryption key. As a result it may be at least the cash withdrawals or money transfer between bank accounts.
At first glance the contactless smart cards are more protected because their chip is coated by plastic. However, the data being transmitted over the air-communication channel using present primitive modulations methods may be easily eavesdropped, intercepted and deciphered using so-called side channels, because of the lack of microprocessor and cryptocontroller.
