Wound Dressing Impervious to Chemical and Biological Warfare Agents

Summary:
The present invention is generally directed to a wound dressing comprised of an external occlusive layer, a lower skin-contacting substrate layer and an absorbent layer there between for the uptake of body fluids such as blood or wound exudate. An absorbent region is enclosed within and defined by an adhesive seal placed around the perimeter of the skin contacting layer. The seal prevents migration of the body fluid from the absorbent region while retaining positive healing environment about the wound.

PURPOSE:
The Wound Dressing Impervious to Chemical and Biological Agents is a giant advance in the treatment of personnel wounded in environments contaminated or potentially contaminated with chemical or biological warfare agents. While conducting operations in a chemically or biologically contaminated environment, an individual may sustain an injury which could penetrate the protective layers of protective clothing and lacerate the skin. This wound dressing has been patented and designed to resist chemical and biological warfare agents. It prevents further contamination of a laceration or other wounds by creating an impervious barrier between the wound and the outer environment. Furthermore, the dressing has the added ability to hold and dispense measured amounts of appropriate decontamination agents onto and around the injured area further reducing the effects of contamination. As an added benefit of this dressing it posses the ability to re-seal the tear in the protective outer garment directly over the wound preventing additional damage from chem/bio agents contacting exposed skin beneath the chem/bio protective garment. Finally the dressing will absorb and contain, in a non-porous covering, the exudates of the wound from leeching into the absorbent layers of a chem/bio protective garment thus prolonging the effectiveness of the garment.

This dressing is a superb advancement in the protection of attending medical personnel. The outermost layer of the bandage is resistant to chemical and biological agents, while the skin-contacting layer of the dressing is provided with an uninterrupted border of pressure sensitive adhesive which provides a chemical and biological resistant seal to the area around the wound thereby containing body fluid within the absorbent region of the dressing. This arrangement will prevent the migration of body fluids beyond the barriers of the dressing and allow for a safe means of minimizing exposure to the potentially contaminated exudates of the patient being treated. This effectively reduces the possibility of cross-contamination of attending personnel with chem/bio agents or contagions contained in the exudates of the patient.

ADVANTAGES:
This dressing offers numerous advantages over any product in the medical community. There is an obvious need for the protection of injured personnel in contaminated areas along with the protection from cross-contamination of attending medical personnel. In todays world with the ever-growing threat of both bioterrorism, a this dressing is perfectly timed for entrance into the marketplace.

Current wound dressings do not have the capabilities this dressing provides: Isolation of the wound in a barrier designed to protect against chemical and biological warfare agents, absorption and containment of bodily fluids from attending personnel and from interacting with the chem/bio protective outer garment, the ability to deliver decontamination agents directly to and around the injured area, and the ability to re-seal a torn chem/bio protective outer garment.

The implementation and use of this dressing in hospital settings, by forward deployed military personnel, by HAZMAT handlers and domestic first responders will be a significant advantage over the present methods of chem/bio control, treatment, and containment and also for disease control.

Currently the United States Military does not have an adequate method of protection and treatment for lacerations and other wounds sustained in a chemically or biologically contaminated environment. By supplying our military, police, HAZMAT units, anti-terrorism units, and any agency which is under a threat of chemical or biological contamination we would advance the survival rate for persons who sustained injuries in such areas.

POTENTIAL:
This dressing has tremendous potential to be successfully marketed and sold both domestically and in the international marketplace. Law Enforcement Departments, Military Units, HAZMAT handlers, and Anti-Terrorism Units, and other governmental agencies such as FEMA and the FBI should be targeted as the initial purchasers of this dressing. International organizations such as the World Health Organization, Red Cross, Peace Corps, and United Nations Peace Keeping Forces will be targeted on the global scale. The adoption and implementation by such organizations and agencies will introduce this dressing to international end-users the world over.

Foreign governments, with a history of terrorism and biological warfare will be targeted to stock-pile supplies of the dressing for disbursement among their civilian citizens during periods of increased threat. As any sterile bandage, this dressing will also have an expiration date (yet to be determined) so periodic re-stocking of supplies will occur in large scale.

This is a one-time-use, disposable product.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION (Quoted from US PAT. #6,787,680):
The present invention relates to bandages that are used for containment of and prevention of migrating body fluids. Migrating body fluids are detrimental to a chemical and biological resistant garment and can increase the absorption of chemicals through the skin and may further injure/incapacitate the wounded individual. It is also beneficial to contain body fluids within the dressing to prevent unnecessary exposure to body fluids by attendant personnel.

It is an object of the present invention to increase the capacity and rate of fluid uptake within an occlusive wound dressing, and to contain and prevent the migration of body fluids into the chem/bio protective garment.

It is an object of the present invention to contain and prevent the migration of body fluids through the perimeter of the occlusive dressing thereby controlling exposure to body fluid by attending personnel.

Much effort has been directed to enhancing the uptake, capacity and containment of bodily fluids within this chemical and biological resistant wound dressing, while paying particular attention to the ability to eliminate migration of bodily fluids beyond the absorbent areas of the dressing; this is necessary to prevent more rapid absorption of chemicals through the fabric of the chemical resistant garment preventing further injury or incapacitation to the wounded person and to prevent the escape of bodily fluids into the surrounding environment thereby protecting attending persons from contagions and pathogens possibly contained in the bodily fluids of the wounded person. In response to this need, absorbent layers in wound dressings have been provided with hydrocolloids, super absorbents, and synthetic materials that have extensive capacities to absorb bodily fluids. By incorporating these technologies with an occlusive layer impervious to both chemical and biological agents provided with an uninterrupted border of pressure sensitive adhesive, bodily fluids may be contained against the persons body without leakage, and a protective outer patch may be applied to increase the integrity of the damaged chem/bio garment.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
The present invention is directed towards wound dressings impervious to chemical and biological agents therefore designed for use in chemically and biologically contaminated environments and for wound dressing designed for use in protecting attending persons from contamination of biological contagions from the wounded person, having a designated absorbent region defined by liquid resistant materials that enable the uptake and storage of bodily fluids within the wound dressing, while simultaneously containing and preventing the migration of bodily fluids from the occlusive dressing thereby preventing exposure to any contagion or pathogen that may be present in said bodily fluid.
