Vehicle Emergency Brake and Anti-Jackknife System
A ground engaging emergency brake skid ( affixed rubber pad on bottom) centered under the two rear trailer axles. Emergency Stop: actuation by computer with manual over-ride, hydraulics push brake skid down on roadway, causing tremendous drag at trailer’s rear resulting in self correction and a quick safe stop.
The Boros Anti-Jackknifing/Emergency Brake System is so superior to any other braking system it will revolutionize the way trailers will be manufactured in the near future. When the insurance companies, environmentalist, news media and most importantly, The Federal Department of Transportation have knowledge of this innovation, we believe it will become mandatory on all tractor-trailers transporting flammables, corrosives, radio-active and hazardous waste.
This device is a ground engaging emergency brake and is cradled under the center of the two rear trailer axles, consisting of a horizontal brake skid approximately 6 ft long and 2 ft. wide. Attached to the bottom of this is a replaceable rubber pad having a high coefficient of friction to the road surface (a studded pad is available for winter). The brake skid can be configured for either manual or computer activation, and when employed, a hydraulic rod pushes it downward to engage the road surface with a computed force (a predetermined percentage of trailer weight). There is a great advantage having this braking force in the center-rear of the trailer. As the road surface is engaged, much of the trailer weight is transferred from the outside 8 wheels to the brake skid - leaving a substantial 12 sq. ft. of rubber wanting to adhere to the road surface. This creates such a drag on the rear of the trailer, it will even stop jack-knifing while in a turn, and stop the entire unit if desired. The average combined 8 tire to road surface contact area is approximately 4 ½ sq. ft. It must be pointed out that these rubber tire compounds are vastly inferior to the rubber used on the brake skid. The tires are of course engineered to give tens of thousands of miles of wear, support very heavy loads, endure many road hazards and then hopefully be able to stop on a dime. For this reason tire compounds are highly compromised in an attempt to satisfy the afore mentioned needs. The further from the center of the trailer the brake force is applied (right and left side tires vs. central brake skid) the greater the variance of brake force, the trailer will tend to jack-knife to the side having less resistance (less brake force). The center brake skid has little to no variance since it’s centered and only 2 ft wide. We are confident that this anti-jackknifing /emergency brake will successfully deliver a tractor trailer from a jackknife, and bring the entire unit to a safe and very quick stop. This would be equally welcome on a tractor trailer or a dump truck experiencing catastrophic brake failure while descending a steep mountain road. The final resting place for many of these trucks is over the side of a mountain. Until the debut of The Boros Anti-Jackknifing/Emergency Brake System™, the only significant help a truck driver may have in a like situation is the aid of an off road runaway truck ramp. This is often a short exit ramp with an extremely steep incline, built to the right of the roadway so far as practical, in the hope of stopping or slowing down the truck enough to allow the driver to exit.
The reader will comprehend the benefits of this innovation which include many lives saved and many more spared serious injury. Also, it will save millions of dollars in cargo, vehicle, trailer, and other property loss. Imagine the grief and heart ache avoided, when a tanker filled with toxic chemicals is saved from rupturing, and a community spared from evacuating their homes and businesses while traffic is forced to find alternate routes.
Problem this idea/invention addresses:
Will deliver a tractor trailer out of a jackknife and bring it to a quick safe stop. It will save many lives, prevent many injuries and save millions of dollars in motor vehicle loss and property damage.
